Bad advices and dangerous misconceptions about skin care

Cosmetic life hacks are passed from mouth to mouth, but they are not always effective and useful.

Their origin may be very different, but many misconceptions are so tenacious that they haunt us since childhood: for example, not only grandmothers, but also different cosmetologists spoke about the use of decorative cosmetics.

We dispel ten popular myths about how to care for your skin (and explain how to do it).

Cauterize inflammation

Episodic inflammations really pass faster if you act on them pointwise by special means (we can recommend Clarins Stop Imperfections Locales Blemish Control and Clean & Clear Advantage Acne Spot Treatment gels, as well as Burt’s Bees Anti-Blemish Targeted Spot Treatment lotion).

Despite the fact that the concentration of active substances in them is high, it is still not pure alcohol, eau de toilette or toothpaste, which is often advised to be applied to acne in order to dry the skin.

First of all, with such improvised means, it is not always possible to solve the problem, and in addition, you can dry your skin and even get a burn if you leave the paste on your face for a long time.

Mix cosmetics yourself

The world is full of beautiful or not very cosmetic products that cost reasonable money.

Therefore, the desire to independently mix the cleanser with baking soda, dandruff shampoo with aspirin or face scrub with sugar seems to us at least unjustified.

It is based primarily on the common misconception that such ingredients, added manually, are “natural”, and everything in the bank is “chemistry”.

Even when it comes to vegetables and fruits, everything is not so simple: the freshest strawberries from the garden can cause an allergic reaction, and its ability to nourish the skin with vitamins better than the finished product is greatly exaggerated.

Sugar grains, in turn, can injure even the most delicate skin of the body, aspirin, although it has an anti-inflammatory effect, is very difficult to add in the necessary and safe proportion, and soda with its pH 8 seriously violates the skin’s pH (it ranges between 4.5 and 6.5) and dries it.

Treat Acne With Tan

Firstly, medications prescribed by a doctor to treat acne increase the skin’s sensitivity to ultraviolet radiation, so their users should not be in the sun or in a solarium.

But for those who do not take medications, one should be careful with the sun: despite the fact that the sunbaths can give a weak anti-inflammatory effect, they will not cure the disease, but the likelihood of pigmentation will increase, and aging will accelerate.

The only definitely positive effect of tanning is rather decorative: indeed, on darker skin unevenness is not so noticeable and intuitively it is perceived as healthier, but this is all a disguise, and not a solution to the problem.

Wash face once a day

Even if you don’t use makeup at all, a single evening wash with the product “to wash away the accumulated over the day” is not enough.

Regular two-time (and three-time – if you exercise before a sweat) cleansing the skin with a soft cream or foam helps the skin absorb moisturizers and serums well and recover from diseases like rosacea, and also reduces the likelihood of inflammation and makes the pores cleaner.

Use baby oil to attract tanning

Baby oils like the well-known Johnson’s Baby moisturize the skin, but do not contain sunscreens – and therefore contribute to sunburn.

Many people love these oils because it is an effective and inexpensive (compared to good bronzers) way to get a thick tan in a short time, but they prefer not to think about the consequences of the skin burning faster with them.

Exfoliate skin vigorously

Exfoliation is necessary, but it should never injure.

For different types and conditions of skin, there are means: scrubs with abrasive particles, enzyme peels, gadgets like Clarisonic, Foreo, Clinique brushes or even makeup wipes.

Owners of oily or combination skin are often resorted to zealous cleansing, but the lack of hydration and too hard exfoliation not only do not establish seoregulation, but also strengthen it.

In addition, aggressive physical procedures (advice on rubbing your face with ice cubes also applies here) can provoke rosacea.

Choose aggressive product

Previous paragraph is called upon to dispel the belief that any “working” cosmetics should burn, bake, or otherwise cause discomfort.

Immediately it is worth making a reservation that some means with acids, mud or oxygen masks slightly tingle the skin, which is due to the very mechanism of their action and is always prescribed in the instructions.

But burning, tightening or redness after a moisturizing tonic or base cream contradict their tasks and signal only that this remedy is not suitable.

Use too much cosmetic products

We all know very well how difficult it is to refrain from buying and instantly trying another advertised or simply beautiful can, but it is better to be patient.

Usually, for the quality skin care, three or four products are used at a time: for cleansing, sunscreen, cream and serum, working with specific problems (anti-aging or for problem skin, for example).

Masks, scrubs, oils and other means are also needed, but you should not do all the procedures in one go, otherwise you can provoke irritation.

In addition, it is necessary to monitor how the funds are combined with each other, and with a large number of cans it is even more difficult to control.

Go for sports without washing off your makeup

We understand what may be caused by reluctance to go out without a comfortable foundation or tinted eyebrows and eyelashes.

Nevertheless, it is not worth doing sports, wrapped in cosmetics: heated skin can even perceive harmless mineral powder as an obstacle and respond to inflammation (although pores should not clog).

If you still can’t get to classes without makeup, carry napkins with you to remove it, and it’s better to use foam and cream, because you also need to wash off sweat after class.

Extend the life of cosmetics

The most common advice on saving on mascara is to dilute it with dried water or eye drops.

Doing this is not worth it for one reason: almost all mascara dries at about the time when it is no longer possible to use (the maximum lifespan is three months or, better, two).

The resurrection of broken powders, shadows and blush of conjunctivitis does not threaten, but you should be prepared for the fact that after you add petroleum jelly or alcohol to the crushed pigment, the product will fall on the skin in a different way and again can cause an unpredictable reaction.

    1. Any procedures should be done in preliminary study of the features of your skin in order to take care of it correctly.
Don’t be afraid. Face is an important part of yourself ❤
